FOREST DRAWN AGAINST BUFFALOES

The ABSA Cup is the only Cup game in Zambia. With 8 teams that participate, Top six teams by mid-season in the Super League and Top two teams by mid-season in the national division league.

Forest Rangers Football Club was 3rd by week 17 of the MTN Super League, which automatically qualified them to this year’s ABSA Cup. The other 5 from the Super League were, Power Dynamos, Green Buffaloes, Red Arrows, Green Eagles and FC MUZA. The two from the National division league were Trident who qualified for their maiden ABSA Cup and Mufulira Wanderers.

This year’s draws were held at the New ABSA House on the 1st March, 2023. The ABSA Bank Zambia PLC Managing Director Mizinga Melu announced the launch of the K4.4 worth Cup Soccer tournament that will commence with the quarter finals slated for Nkoloma stadium in Lusaka on the 11 and 12 march 2023. The draws for the tournament were also Graced by Minister of Youth Sport and Art Honourable Elvis Nkandu MP, FAZ President Andrew Kamanga and Multichoice Managing Director Leah Kooma.

And speaking at the same event, Hon Minister of Youth, Sport and art Elvis Nkandu commended Absa for the
unwavering support towards sports through sponsorship of the Absa Cup since 2007.

“This sponsorship of the Absa Cup has been in existence since 2007 and am sure I speak for all soccer fans in Zambia in thanking Absa for their continued investment in this passion sport”, Mr. Nkandu stated

This year’s sponsorship is valued at K4.4m and will cover prize money, match expenses, media and advertising costs and rights fees. The winners’ prize money has been upped to K700,000 from K650,000 last year. The runners’ up will walk away with K350,000 from K300,000 last year. Two new awards for golden boot for the top scorer and golden gloves for the best goalkeeper have been introduced and each will receive K25,000. Other prizes include player of the tournament who will receive K25,000 and man of the match for each game played in the competition will receive K15,000

There has also been an increase in the travel grant from K20,000 to K30,000 for teams travelling from out of town while the teams playing in their hometown will receive K20,000 each.

Back to the draws, the teams were seeded according to their recent participation in the ABSA Cup, Seeded teams participated the most and unseeded teams the least.

Power Dynamos, Red Arrows, Green Eagles and Green Buffaloes were in the seeded pot while Forest Rangers, FC MUZA, Mufulira Wanderers and FC MUZA were in the unseeded pot.

The winners of the First Match will face the winner of the second match in the semi- final at the Arthur Davies Stadium on the 8th April, 2023.

The winners of the third match will face the winner of the fourth match in the semi- final to be held at Arthur Davies Stadium on the 9th April, 2023

Multichoice Managing Director Leah Kooma and FAZ President Andrew Kamanga both hailed the sponsorship and commended Absa Bank Zambia and the Government for the continued support towards the development of
football in Zambia.
