29 May FOREST FINALLY BAGS A TROPHY
It was a moment that will forever live in the minds of everyone associated with Forest Rangers as the Ian Bakala coached side trounced MUZA to win their maiden Absa Cup.
Forest etched their name in history books of Zambian football after beating MUZA 2-0 at Woodlands Stadium to lift the trophy.
Prior to lifting the ABSA Cup , Forest’ last silverware was the Coca Cola Cup in 2005.
While bookmakers fancied Mazabuka to carry the day the opposite happened in front of a capacity crowd led by Republican President Hakainde Hichilema as Forest conquered.
MUZA have caused havoc in the league this season and have earned an historic qualification to play continental football after finishing second on the log so their were favourites to triumph.
An own goal in the first half by MUZA defender Chanda Chileshe and forward Quadri Kola’s effort were enough to hand Forest the famous win. Chileshe beat custodian Monga Ndala on 16 minutes after a Diego Apanane cross was parried off his thigh by the former before it crossed the line.
Nigerian Kola sealed victory three minutes after the hour mark with a brilliant finish.
Before Kola doubled the lead man-of-the-match Amenu Moro saw his goal disallowed by a video assistant referee decision.
VAR was making a debut in Zambia.
MUZA also had chances of their own to equalise but found goalkeeper Daniel Mutshinemu on top of his game.
After the final whistle, Forest players, officials and supporters all went agog as they celebrated the team’s cup succes which had eluded them team for close to two decades.
By beating MUZA the Ndola outfit became the tenth team to win the prestigious cup competition since it’s inception in 2007.
Forest pocketed K700,000 for winning the championship.
Fole Malembe joined record winners Zesco United,Zanaco,Nkana,Power Dynamos,Napsa Stars,Lusaka Dynamos, Zanaco,Green Buffaloes and Red Arrows on a list of winners.
Forest were participating in the tournament for the third time.
And when President Hichilema handed over the trophy to skipper Cedric Djeugoue it was party time.
